Ever since she first brought him home from the hospital, JJ’s tried to get Henry into a pattern. Feeds, baths, bedtime, she kept them all on a timetable as best she could, knowing from time to time that changes would be unavoidable.
That was never more true than six months ago when Will moved out and they agreed to share joint custody. His pattern may not match hers, and she tells herself that she’s ok with that, and sometimes she even believes it.
Besides, she knows that she breaks the pattern too sometimes. Because despite swearing that she never could, sometimes she takes Henry into her bed when he wakes up at night, falls asleep with his breath as her lullaby and her hand at his back.
Tonight, the pattern is more upset than it’s ever been.
Because Henry is not in her bed; he’s across town in Will’s apartment, and lying where he normally does is Hotch. Her head is on his chest, his breath her lullaby, and his fingertips trace idle patterns on her back and shoulder.
She should be sleeping, but she is wide awake, and knows he knows it when she hears his soft, amused voice. “You’re thinking too much.”
Despite herself, she smiles. It’s an accusation that she would normally level at him, and since they’ve found themselves falling for one another, she’s thought it more than once, wished that he’d just grab her, kiss her, do what they’d just done.
Now her wish has come true and she’s not quite sure what to do next.
“Is this a mistake?” she hears her own voice asking, and his fingers stop moving across her back. She feels the loss at once, hadn’t realised how much she was enjoying it, but then both his arms are around her, holding her tightly.
“Never,” is all he says, but it’s the only word she needs to hear.
Closing her eyes, she lets herself fall asleep.
